DAVENPORTS ing home. The famous Midland brand – once known for its “beer at home” deliveries – is restoring an impressive terracotta pub just a stone’s throw from its former Birmingham brewery.

The Bath Row base closed down in 1989 and since then the Davenports brand has had something of a turbulent time.

But now it has been revived by Smethwick-based pub company, Global Star, which bought it in 2007.

And the company has now taken over a fine grade II-listed pub, in Bishopsgate Street near Five Ways, recently known as the City Tavern.

As well as refurbishing the classic Victorian boozer, Davenports plans to revive its original name, The Bull’s Head.

The pub, which dates back to is com- 1901, will be one first new bars in years. Simon Key, Davenports brand director, said: “Although we are not looking to bring back door deliveries yet, you can still get your beer at home in our take-out party cans from the venues. “Davenports was established in Birmingham back in 1829 but was at its biggest during the Edwardian era when of Davenports’ more than 30 it introduced the beer at home delivery service. We hope to bring some of this history back to life and give Brum back its beer heritage.” He added: “We have over 300 years of combined brand heritage, with some of the most iconic beers in the Midlands, and we’ve been working hard over the last few years to bring back some of these famous old beers. “The new Bulls Head gives us a great venue in which to sample some of the famous Birmingham beers.”
