Bag up excess rubbish over Christmas

-

BIRMINGHAM bin collection bosses have agreed to collect excess waste if it is securely bundled and left on the pavement.

Because there are no collections on Boxing Day and Tuesday December 27, there have been concerns about the amount of rubbish building up.

Anyone whose usual waste collection falls on Monday or Tuesday will have their bins picked up a week later.

Their recycling collections will be two weeks later, leaving a four-week gap between the wheelie bins being emptied.

A spokesman for Birmingham City Council said: “It is recognised during the festive period that many households produce more waste.

“For those with wheelie bins, reasonable amounts of household waste will be collected if presented in bags at the side of the bins.

“To maximise the space in your recycling bin, collapse cardboard boxes. If there still isn’t enough room, excess paper and card recycling will be collected if bundled securely with string and presented alongside the recycling bin.”

If householders want to dispose of rubbish themselves, Birmingham’s five tips will only be closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

In Solihull there are no collections on December 26, with the next collection on Monday January 2, and with bagged extra rubbish allowed.

Those whose next recycling is due on Boxing Day can take advantage of an extra early collection tomorrow, as long as the bin is out by 7am.
