Commons ‘spouts sanctimony’ over Trump

-

MIDLAND MP Michael Fabricant has defended Donald Trump’s ban on immigrants from seven Muslim-majority countries – saying the US President was keeping a promise made to voters.

And Mr Fabricant, Conservative MP for Lichfield, condemned fellow MPs for “sanctimony” as they queued up to condemn President Trump.

Black Country MP David Winnick (Lab Walsall North) was among those who attacked the US President in the House of Commons this week.

But Mr Fabricant said on Twitter: “Parliament is at its worst when it spouts sanctimony over Trump. MPs are shocked that a politician made a promise before an election and kept it.”

In the run-up to the US Presidential election, Mr Trump called for “a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can figure out what is going on”.

And as president, he has now issued an executive order banning most people from coming to the US from Iraq, Syria, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen, for 90 days.

There is also an indefinite ban on Syrian refugees.

However, the president has also issued a statement insisting that he was not targeting Muslims.

President Trump said in a written statement : “To be clear, this is not a Muslim ban, as the media is falsely reporting. This is not about religion – this is about terror and keeping our country safe.” MPs condemned the policy as they questioned Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson. David Winnick (Lab Walsall North) told the House of Commons Mr Trump was a “wretched man, a bigoted man”. Shabana Mahmood, Labour MP for Birmingham Ladywood, said: “This order doesn’t stigmatise just on the basis of nationality, it stigmatises on the basis of faith. “This is a Muslim ban.” Mr Johnson said that only a minority of Muslims lived in the countries affected, and former US President Barack Obama had also named the seven countries as sources of terror.
