Labour party candidate in anti-Semitism row is ditched

-

A LABOUR Party candidate has been deselected from a council by-election after sharing anti-Semitic Jewish conspiracy theories on social media.

The controversial Facebook posts from Alison Gove-Humphries emerged four days after she had been selected by members in Hall Green to stand for election in May.

The Birmingham Board of the Labour Party met last Friday night to begin the process of approving potential candidates for the 2018 council elections.

Mrs GoveHumphries had argued the controversial posts were shared by her on a private Facebook page and were taken out of context. She highlighted a previous association with the Holocaust Education Trust.

But the Board decided to remove Mrs Gove-Humphries from its list.

A Labour Party spokesman said: “Alison Gove-Humphries has been removed from the panel of approved local candidates.”

Luckily for the Labour Party there is still time for members to meet to select a new candidate before the official deadline.

The by-election was called following the resignation of Labour councillor Sam Burden due to family and work commitments.

The election is likely to be closely fought and the deselection has been welcomed by opposition Conservative leader Robert Alden who said: “The Labour group now need to explain why they thought she was acceptable candidate.

“If they can’t pick a candidate properly how can we trust them to run the council,” he added.
