Mike Inskipp’s generous gesture was revealed to researcher­s by George’s great niece Anita Bentley, who still lives locally.

Permission was sought from the Diocese of Lichfield to replace the private memorial. The Diocese advised that once the new headstone was in place, the plot would forever come under the control of the Commonweal­th War Graves Commission.

Just a week ago, Driver George Gough’s replacemen­t headstone was installed.

It is a fitting memorial for a young man who answered the call to arms and paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Thanks to the tireless work of Richard and Lee, the residents of Driver Gough’s home village know a lot more about his bravery.
