Poems of student killed by boy racers published

-

A TALENTED student who was killed by a speeding car is to have a book of her poems published.

Rebecca McManus died after the driver of a Mitsubishi Evolution racing another car lost control at around 90mph and smashed into her as she waited for a bus in Hagley Road, Warley.

The 21-year-old had been on her way to a party on May 31 2014 when she was struck and killed instantly.

Her friend Harriet Barnsley was left with life-changing injuries.

Rebecca had just finished her degree at the University of East Anglia (UEA) in Norwich when she died.

Now, three years after her death, her parents are releasing a 180-page book of the young English graduate’s work.

The collection entitled A Book of Fragments and Dreams was the idea of Rebecca’s mother Cathy McManus and was launched in Norwich at an event in Rebecca’s memory by the University of East Anglia and The Writers’ Centre.

Mrs McManus, from Oldbury, said: “Rebecca had a natural gift for poetry and had individual poems previously published. The book seems fitting as it was one of Rebecca’s ambitions. Rebecca had always hoped to have at least one book published and she had already chosen the title for the book. We hope it will provide inspiration for other young poets.”

Rebecca’s 159 poems cover subject matter as diverse as the changing of the seasons, romance and the wonders of the sky. The book is available for £9.99 and can be ordered from most bookshops as well as online from Amazon, The Wordery and Book Depository.

Two men were jailed for their roles in Rebecca’s death. Sukvinder Mannan, of Roundhills Road, Halesowen, admitted causing death and injury by dangerous driving and was imprisoned for eight years.

Inderjit Singh, of Cranbourne Avenue, Wolverhampton, was jailed for a year after admitting dangerous driving.
