Spaghetti roadworks could last up to 2 months

-

A NEW set of speed restrictions and road closures are due to come into force at Spaghetti Junction in Birmingham.

Highways England has announced plans to carry out work underneath the main carriageway around junction six of the M6 where it connects with the A38(M) Aston Expressway.

Work was due to start this month and is expected to last up to two months.

A speed limit of 30mph will be put in place on the link road leading from the southbound carriageway of the M6 to the Aston Expressway.

The 30mph limit will also be imposed on the southbound carriageway leading from the M6 to Salford Circus island.

The speed restriction will be in force 24 hours a day and lanes on these two link roads will be closed with traffic allowed to use the hard shoulder instead.

There will also be full closures of the link roads but they will take place overnight between 8pm and 6am while vehicles exceeding three metres in width will be banned from the road during the works.

Highways England project manager Jessica Kenny said: “To ensure disruption to motorists is kept to a minimum, the link road will remain open during the day with some overnight closures required as the scheme progresses.

“Safety is always our top priority so we will be using speed restrictions on the M6 southbound exit slip while we work underneath the carriageway.”

This latest project comes at a busy time for the West Midlands’ motorway network with roadworks on the northbound M6 between junctions seven and eight while major repair work is due to start in the coming weeks at the Oldbury Viaduct between junctions one and two of the M5.
