New restaurant to open in former school for deaf Ex-Gordon Ramsey chef appointed to create modern dishes
AN historic Edgbaston building has been transformed into a new restaurant. Three Church Road has been developed alongside the new Audley St George’s Place retirement village – but is a separate venture with its own entrance.
The historic site consists of three houses formally belonging to the Royal School for Deaf Children and dating back to the late 1800s.
The building has now had a stylish make-over, retaining the glorious period features and character of the Grade II-listed building in which it is housed.
The new owners hope the 35-seater restaurant will attract more foodies to Edgbaston, as it is around the corner from the Michelin-starred Simpsons restaurant and the burgeoning ‘Edgbaston Village’ area.
The leafy suburb is fast becoming a go-to area for gastronomes. Other nearby bars and restaurants include The Highfield, Blue Piano, El Borracho de Oro, Praza and The Physician, which opened late last year.
The kitchen will serve modern European dishes created by head chef Hari Krishnamurthy, who previously worked for Gordon Ramsay’s Plane Food restaurant at Heathrow Terminal 5.
On the menu will be butternut squash velouté, lemon grass, feta cheese, pan-seared scallops, black pudding crumb, beef dripping, Jerusalem artichokes as well as heritage beetroots, goat’s cheese and Granny Smith. Main dishes include German spätzle, seasonal vegetables, parmesan foam. There will also be Atlantic pan-roasted stone bass, samphire, and squid ink tuile.
The dessert menu will include chocolate delice cherry caramel and evaporated milk, as well as Mandarin iced parfait.
Restaurant general manager Robert Diaper said: “Our emphasis is on creating what diners will hopefully see as exciting dishes in chic and contemporary surroundings. We’ve had brilliant support from the local Edgbaston business community. Luke Tipping from Simpsons has popped in to wish us luck – though we are not trying to be Simpsons.
“What’s great is that the more Edgbaston grows as a food and drink destination, the better it is for all the businesses here. We look forward to welcoming Edgbaston locals people from all over the city.”
Three Church Road will open on Wednesday, May 24, serving lunch, dinner as well as afternoon tea.
Meanwhile, a new sushi restaurant is also set to open Birmingham.
OKO sushi bar will offer a modern take on traditional sushi and be based in the ground floor of Nuvo and bar in Brunswick Square, Brindleyplace in May.
OKO is the brainchild of Stephania Christoforou, the managing director of Nuvo.
She said: “As a concept, OKO will focus on creating both food and atmosphere that are as close to the feel of a traditional sushi bar as possible.”
