Victim died 14 months after attack

-

A MURDER inquiry has been launched after a Birmingham father died 14 months after being knocked down by a car driven by his daughter’s “jealous and violent” ex boyfriend.

Paul Maloney, 53, was left in a wheelchair after Samuel Rogers drove his car into the family in September 2015. Rogers, from Walsall, is serving a 20-year term for the attack on Mr Maloney, his wife and daughter.

At an inquest on Tuesday it was revealed Mr Maloney died in November and police had opened a murder inquiry. A post mortem examination gave the cause of death as sepsis, pneumonia and a skin lesion disorder.

Det Insp Paul Joyce told the inquest his team was in the process of establishing if the medical conditions were brought on by the original injuries.

“We have to decide if this is murder and at the moment we are treating it as murder,” he said.

The force is in consultation with the CPS and medical experts.

Senior Birmingham Coroner Louise Hunt said if no-one is charged, then the inquest will take place on August 3.
