Beating the drop would be greatest prize for Davis

-

DAVID Davis has spoken of his pride at his award-winning season – and his belief that Birmingham City will be able to apply the right finish this weekend.

Davis’ creditable personal campaign reached a high point last Sunday night when he won three awards at the club’s end-of-season dinner.

The 26-year-old scooped the prestigious Players’ Player and Supporters’ Player categories, while his equaliser in the derby match was named Moment of the Season.

Even with Sunday’s crucial trip to Bristol City still remaining, Davis has made more Championship starts and scored more league goals than in his two previous seasons at St Andrew’s.

He has also emerged as a fan favourite with strikes against both Villa and Wolves.

“I am massively proud,” he said. “Personally it’s obviously been a good season but it would have been better if we were higher up the table.

“I think my game has developed, working under the three managers I have this season each has taught me something different and pointed out different weaknesses they have seen in me.

“I have tried to work on those. Obviously I can’t perfect it in one game or two games but I would like to think I paid enough attention to correct it in some aspects of my game.

“The positive feedback means the world to be honest because I haven’t come through this academy, I have come from a rival team. I could have easily been tarnished a certain way. “But they [the fans] have taken to me like I am one of their own and I have just tried to give 110 per cent because I know that’s what Birmingham City fans like. “I can’t really ask any more.” Davis had another barnstorming game in last weekend’s 2-0 victory over Huddersfield as Blues won to keep themselves out of the drop zone. That means they go to Ashton Gate at the weekend knowing another victory would guarantee their second tier status and condemn either Blackburn or Nottingham Forest to the drop.

“I am more than positive,” he said.

“From what I have seen, what the gaffer [Harry Redknapp] and Steve [Cotterill] have had to say, the training sessions we have done and how the lads have responded.

“I think you can see from Saturday’s performance we are not rolling over. We might have been easier to beat before but we have shown we have that grittiness and we can be a solid team like we were before.”

Blues will take on Stourbridge in a pre-season friendly at the War Memorial Ground on Wednesday, July 12. The game will kick off at 7.30pm.

Blues signed defender Dan Scarr from the Glassboys in the January transfer window and, while he is yet to make his first-team bow, the club have high hopes for his development.
