Baggies set to offer Pulis a new contract

- Paul Suart Football Writer

ALBION are expected to offer Tony Pulis another contract extension in the summer, regardless of the club’s results during the run-in.

Chairman John Williams said in February he would make the case to Albion’s Chinese owner Guochuan Lai and the board for the Welshman to be offered a new deal.

“I think he’s very good for West Brom,” Williams said of Pulis, who signed a one-year extension last October tying him to the club until the summer of 2018.

“And it would be my recommendation to colleagues in China that, all things being equal, I would be more than happy to see his contract extended.”

The Baggies have won just two of nine matches since Williams’ public vote of confidence and have lost the last four.

But the Birmingham Post understands his stance on Pulis is not likely to change, irrespective of how Albion end the campaign.

Despite poor recent form, they remain eighth in the table and could still reach 50 Premier League points for the first time with two wins from the final four games.

Pulis’ ability to make the most of limited resources will inevitably curry favour with Lai.

A study published last week showed Albion had spent a league-low £1.47 million on transfers for every league point gained this term.

Pulis and Williams are set to fly to China at the end of the season to meet Lai and discuss a potential budget for the summer transfer window.

The head coach is likely to return to China later in the summer with Albion set to compete in the Premier League Asia Trophy.

No official announcement has yet been made about the tournament, but Pulis has said his customary pre-season training camp in Austria will go ahead.
