OAP’s ‘life ruined’ after tray of bread fell on her in Aldi

- Nick McCarthy Staff Reporter

THE family of a great-grandmother claim her life has been “ruined” after a tray of bread fell on her in a Birmingham supermarket.

Dorothy Green, 86, suffered a broken hip in the accident at the Ward End branch of Aldi on March 25, they said.

Her daughter, Janet Newbury, claims the supermarket chain refused to accept liability for the accident and instead blamed other shoppers for dislodging the tray.

But Ms Newbury, from Redditch, is demanding action from Aldi, claiming it is “only a matter of time” before somebody else is seriously injured.

Mrs Green, who is a carer for her 91-year-old husband Ken- neth, insisted on being taken home after the accident, despite being in agony. An ambulance was later called to her home in Washwood Heath and she has since undergone surgery for a break to her left hip.

The great-grandmother-of-nine has been told she will now need a carer herself.

“This has ruined mum and dad’s lives,” said Ms Newbury, 67. “Mum was very independent before the accident and was the full-time carer for my dad. Mum refused an ambulance at the store because she had left my 91-yearold dad at home alone and she will only ever leave him for an hour at a time.

“She has only just returned home and she will have to stay downstairs for six weeks. It is going to be very difficult for them.”

Ms Newbury said Aldi offered to pay for Mrs Green’s shopping, but she refused the offer, saying she did not take charity.

She added: “They told me they have seen the CCTV footage and it was not my mum’s fault. However, they said they would not accept liability or make any kind of compensation payment because the bread tray had been moved by another couple and not by a staff member.

“They told me if I want to take it further I should take it to a solicitor. It’s disappointing that they are treating such a loyal customer in this way, but my real concern now is for the safety of other people in the future.”

The Post asked Aldi about the concerns but a spokeswoman did not address them merely saying: “We have apologised to Mrs Green and her family for the distress caused by this unfortunate incident.”
