Production of two choc bars to be moved to Cadbury’s Brum factory
PRODUCTION of Cadbury’s chocolate bars in Birmingham is set to expand for the first time since the completion of a £75 million investment into its Bournville factory.
The Dairy Milk Oreo and Dairy Milk Tiffin will both be made at the city factory from August.
Currently produced in Germany, Dairy Milk Oreo is a recent innovation by the chocolate maker and has never been made in Bournville before.
The Tiffin bar was brought back as a limited edition last year and produced in Poland but in May we reported that it was being reintroduced permanently – 80 years after first being created.
As a result of the investment by Cadbury’s owner Mondelez International, the factory now has four new state-ofthe-art lines as part of a wider £200 million investment into its UK operations since the £11.5 billion takeover by Kraft in 2010.
Glenn Caton, president of northern Europe for Mondelez International, said: “I am delighted that Cadbury Dairy Milk Oreo and Cadbury Dairy Milk Tiffin will be made in Bournville.
“These great tastes are the first addi- tional products we are welcoming to Bournville following our multi-million pound investment in the UK.
“It shows that our investment has paid off and Bournville is now competing in the premier league of European factories.”
Bournville will produce around 28 million Dairy Milk Oreo bars a year which will be on the shelves this autumn, while around 20,000 Tiffin bars will be made an hour at the plant.
When the new lines were unveiled earlier this year, Cadbury confirmed that Bournville would be the home of the Dairy Milk bar after production temporarily shifted to Poland to allow the lines to be installed.
Two of the new lines are dedicated to re ta in ing Bournville as the home of Cadbury Dairy Milk while the other two will create assortments boxes such as Roses and Heroes.
The factory in Bournville opened in 1879 after George and Richard Cadbury moved manufacturing from the centre of Birmingham.
It has an R&D team and innovation kitchen meaning that every Cadbury product sold starts life in Bournville.
There are now a total of 21 manufacturing lines at the site making products such as Giant Buttons, Wispa, Easter egg shells, Caramel nibbles and Caramel eggs.
