Call to save pub from bulldozers

-

A PETITION to try to save a famous Birmingham music pub from the bulldozers boasted more than 2,000 signatures within 20 hours of going online.

The Flapper And Firkin pub, on Cambrian Wharf – close to the Barclaycard Arena – is set to be demolished to make way for 80 new apartments.

Over the years it has staged many gigs, both by established bands playing warm-up shows and by up and coming groups making a name for themselves.

Wolverhampton organiser Will Edwards used www.change.org to call for support after it was revealed that the pub was at risk.

“This petition is to save The Flapper pub and gig venue in Birmingham,” he wrote. “There is talk of development plans to demolish The Flapper and build apartments.

“We need to get as many signatures as possible to send to Birmingham City Council and Whitehorse Estate Ltd and Baskerville Wharf.

“It is an incredible place with a great atmosphere and great company with excellent service and performances by bands. Help save this amazing venue!”

Mr Edwards’ petition gained 2,220 signatures after just 21 hours, just 280 short of its initial 2,500-name target.

The pub was in danger of being demolished almost a decade ago in 2008 after plans were announced for a Brindleyplacestyle scheme alongside the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal.

Although it survived then, plans have now been put forward for a new apartment complex comprising 80 flats.

On its Facebook page, The Flapper And Firkin states: “We understand word is spreading fast, but we don’t actually know all the details yet. We will do in the next couple of weeks and we will release a full and official statement.

“Property developers own the venue, it has not been sold out by us.”
