BBC is delivering on spending pledge

DEAR Editor, I was surprised by your story “Anger as the BBC cuts spending in the region” ( Post, July 20)

The figure you quote covers network TV spend in the Midlands, a narrow measuremen­t that doesn’t reflect the BBC’s full investment in the region.

For example, it doesn’t include network radio content, such as The Archers, or BBC TV shows filmed here by production companies based elsewhere, such as Peaky Blinders.

The amount of money we are spending in the Midlands is going up.

The BBC is now investing more than £130 million in the region every year. Just four years ago, that figure was £90m. That’s seen the Mailbox, our base in Birmingham, become a centre of excellence for training and developmen­t for the whole BBC.

There are now more than 700 BBC staff based at the Mailbox and they will soon be joined by content producers and
