BIRMINGHAM City University has appointed a new deputy vice-chancellor.

Clare Mackie will join the institute in January from the University of Sussex where she has been pro vice-chancellor (teaching and learning) since 2010.

In her current role, Ms Mackie led a major curriculum review with a focus on graduate employability, internationalisation and inclusivity.

Prior to Sussex, she was pro vice-chancellor at the University of Kent.

Her area of academic expertise is pharmacy and she originally moved to Kent to establish a joint school of pharmacy across the universities of Kent and Greenwich.

She has also advised a number of government bodies in England and Scotland and the World Health Organisation on pharmacy matters.

BCU’s vice-chancellor Philip Plowden said: “I am delighted to announce the appointment of Professor Mackie.

“She has an impressive track record as a strategic leader and I know that she will make an excellent addition to the team at Birmingham City University.

“Students must be our number one priority in all that we do and learning and teaching sits at the heart of this.

“Professor Mackie’s experience in achieving academic excellence will be vital as we take this ambitious and transformative university to the next level.”

Ms Mackie added: “Birmingham City University has a unique position at the heart of a young, dynamic and growing city.

“I am passionately committed to delivering a transformative higher education experience that changes the future prospects of our graduates and their families.

“I am attracted to working with Philip and his leadership team because we share common values and feel that Birmingham City University is well placed to respond to the current and future challenges and opportunities facing higher education both nationally and internationally.

“I look forward to working with academic and professional services colleagues and our students to continue the pursuit of excellence in learning and teaching.”
