Gallery to join forces with Royal Ballet for cultural centre

-

THE Trust is currently working with the Birmingham Royal Ballet (BRB) on plans for its ‘Big Store’ development.

BRB is expected to transfer its historic archives and collections to the new site, making them publicly available for the first time in the new culturally themed galleries.

The Museum Trust also wants to move much of its store of art and artefacts from the Collection Centre, which is next to the HS2 route, to the new site.

It is estimated that just one per cent of the Museum & Art Gallery’s collection is currently on display at its various historic sites around the city.

Other back office functions, including its conservation curatorial departments, will move to the new site.

A Museum spokeswoman said: “The proposed facility will offer a completely new type of cultural proposition, combining heritage, visual arts and performing arts with community engagement and skills development.” and also

Alongside the fundraising campaign, Birmingham residents will be asked to reminisce about what the museums means to them and what they would like to see in the newly developed site.

In September the city council appointed contractor Bouygues and a design team including Associated Architects, conservation specialists Rodney Melville & Partners and Hoare Lea M&E Engineers to carry out a feasibility study into the Council House and museum refurbishment.

The study will outline the scale of the project and options for running council business and meetings during the works when it reports back next year.
