Hot shot is ‘top of the Villa hitlist’

- Leon Clarke

VILLA are considering a move for Championship top scorer Leon Clarke, the Post understands.

Sources claim Steve Bruce has the Sheffield United striker ‘top of his shortlist’ of potential replacements for Jonathan Kodjia.

The Villa ace is expected to be out for four months with an ankle injury, leaving Bruce with just one fit option up front.

But with the transfer window set to reopen in little over a month, Villa are believed to be preparing a bid.

Clarke is in the form of his life having scored nine times in the last four games and 13 overall as the Blades have surged to third in the Championship table.

Pete O’Rourke, of Football Insider, revealed: “The former Wolves and Sheffield Wednesday man is entering the final 18 months of his contract at Sheffield United and Villa could test their resolve to hang on to their top scorer in the New Year.

“Sheffield would be loathe to lose Clarke as they look to maintain their own bid for promotion and they would not welcome interest from a potential promotion rival in the well-travelled forward.”

Kodjia broke down in training while on international duty with the Ivory Coast after aggravating the injury he suffered at the end of last season.

Scott Hogan faces a month out of action after undergoing a stomach operation, while Gabby Agbonlahor is also recovering from a calf problem.

Meanwhile, Bruce has praised Chris Samba for filling John Terry’s boots.

The manager said: “He’s done terrific and it’s not easy filling John Terry’s boots. But he’s got that experience and knowhow.”

Samba signed for Villa in the summer after a six-month period at the club proving his fitness and is now working harder than ever to stay in condition.

“He’s really bought into it,” said Bruce.

“And when he trains, he trains just as hard, if not harder. The big thing is recovery. When you’re getting a bit older and you’re 6ft 6ins, it’s all about recovery.’’
