Road safety call after horror crash Victim’s sister backs demand after six killed

- Andy Richardson Staff Reporter

THE sister of a “beautiful and fun-loving” mother who died in the Lee Bank Middleway crash has called for action to stop other families losing their loved ones on the road.

Alison Worth’s sister Lucy Davis, and her partner Lee Jenkins, were among six people who lost their lives in the early hours of Sunday morning in Birmimgham city centre.

Now Ms Worth is supporting an online petition at Change.org, calling for speed cameras and crash barriers on the Lee Bank Middleway and Belgrave Middleway underpass. The campaign has attracted almost 12,000 signatures in the two days since it was launched.

“Having lost my sister so tragically in this incident, I would want things in place to help others avoid the pain we are suffering right now,” she said.

Ms Worth’s post supporting the appeal has itself been shared more than 200 times.

Ms Davis, 43, from Sutton Coldfield, died alongside Lee, 42, as they took a taxi home after dinner with friends. Their driver Imtiaz Mohammed, a father-of-six, was also pronounced dead at the scene.

Ms Davis worked as an interpreter for deaf students and her scientist boyfriend worked at University Hospital Birmingham.

“Life is cruel,” said Ms Worth. “The pain we are enduring is almost unbearable. Please people, always be kind, as you just never know what will happen next.

“They were in a taxi as they wouldn’t think of driving. They were wearing seatbelts as Lulu wouldn’t get in a car if the seatbelts didn’t work.

“They were great together plans.”

Ms Davis’s family also said in a tribute: “Lucy was a beautiful and fun-loving mother, daughter, sister, auntie and friend who brought happy. They were and had so many happiness to the lives of all she met. Rest in Peace our Lady in Red.”

The petition, launched by Mike Carthy, reads: “Following the recent incident on Belgrave Middleway that claimed the lives of six people, we’re petitioning Birmingham City Council to take immediate action to improve the safety of this junction.

“There are no speed cameras inside the underpass and there is no central reservation in place. These factors would have no doubt contributed to the seriousness of this collision and others.”

The others who died in the crash were Kasar Jehangir, 25, and pals Tauqeer Hussain, 26, and Mohammed Fasha, 30, all from Small Heath, who were all in an Audi.

Passenger Zakkria Khan, 22, survived the smash but remains in a serious condition in hospital.
