City one of worst for drink-driving offences

BIRMINGHAM had one of the highest rates of drink-driving in the country, new figures reveal.

More than 12,700 drivers were caught breaking a variety of drink-driving laws the latest available data for 2015 showed.

That worked out at one driver in every 84 in the B postcode area.

Only Wolverhamp­ton higher rate, at one in 77.

The offences includes drinkdrivi­ng itself and failing to provide a breath or blood sample to the police when told to do so. The average across Britain was one in 103.

Depending on the offence, the endorsemen­t on a driving licence for drink offences stays on record for four or 11 years.

The figures show an estimated 200 people were killed in drinkdrivi­ng accidents on British roads in the same years.

That was the lowest total since records began in 1979.

There were fewer than 6,000 accidents involving alcohol per year in Britain from 2013 to 2015.

In the early 1980s that total was running at more than 17,000 per year.
