US needs a real leader, more than another TV personality

-

Hollywood’s finest, she recounted watching Sidney Poitier receive the same award when she was a little girl and the impact it had on her, saying, “It is not lost on me that at this moment, there are some little girls watching as I become the first black woman to be given this same award.”

Oprah clearly understands how her spotlight can help others and make a change for good, a far cry from the current incumbent of the White House.

Compared to the other TV star currently in the Oval Office Oprah would, by comparison, make an exceptional President.

Throughout his time in office, Donald Trump has repeatedly shown himself to be a narcissist with no interest in learning about the nuances of leadership, let alone government.

His sense of selfishness, elitism and ignorance are there for anyone to see.

Even his strongest allies would find it difficult not to admit his Presidency has been nothing short of a train crash.

But as tempting as his failings make it for people to say of Oprah “Hey, at least she’d be better than Trump”, America needs a politician, not a popular star to lead the country.

Nobody really knows how she would respond to the challenges of what is the most challenging of jobs.

But being a leader isn’t like hosting a talk show or running a media brand.

Oprah’s success in her field is no more indicative of her potential to be a good President than Trump’s success in real estate was.

And while many Democrats are crying out for the actress to lead their party in the 2020 election, they now lose the right to attack Trump for having no relevant experience or evident understanding of public policy when he ran for President. America is, of course, a free country, and Oprah – or for that matter anyone – can run if they want.

But if she does, the idea of a Trump-Oprah showdown might make for explosive TV, but will it really serve the country and the world’s best interests?

What would we expect? Kim Jong-un sitting down on the sofa for an hour-long TV special with her talking about why not to bomb America.

Barack Obama’s route to the White House started with a great speech, just like Oprah gave at the Globes. But over the following years, he proved he was worthy of the expectations that had been placed upon him.

It’s possible Oprah could yet prove herself worthy of the attention being put on her running for President, but she has a long way to go until she shows us why, beyond just being rich and famous, she’d actually make a good leader.

ONLY two weeks into the New Year and already we have a contender for book of the year.

Just when you thought Donald Trump’s White House could not get even more bizarre out comes Michael Wolff ’s exposé, Fire and Fury.

Despite being rubbished by the President and his flunkies, the American author quotes some of the US leader’s most trusted lieutenants including his former chief strategist Steve Bannon.

The former loyalist went rogue when he inexplicably told Wolff, Trump’s son Don Jr was treasonous and unpatriotic, daughter Ivanka is as thick as a brick and First Lady, Melania, was crying tears of pain when Trump won.

Elsewhere in the book others who used to admire Trump, are now calling him an idiot, or in the words of The Donald’s great pal, Rupert Murdoch, “a f****** idiot”. Who needs enemies, hey? Only those left on the payroll seem nice to him as Trump’s inner circle shrinks faster than his hairline.

That’s right the same hairline Ivanka allegedly described as: “A contained island after scalp-reduction surgery – surrounded by a furry circle of hair around the sides and front, from which all ends are drawn up to meet in the centre and then swept back and secured by a stiffening spray.”

It seems it not just his hair but his heirs which he is losing now.
