Top hotel admits hygiene failings after mouse infestation
AN upmarket Birmingham hotel which caters for celebrities and Premier League footballers has admitted failing food and hygiene standards following a mice infestation on the premises.
Hotel Du Vin, in Church Street, in Birmingham’s business district, will appear for sentencing at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court on January 22.
Hotel Du Vin Trading Ltd already pleaded guilty to two charges under the Food Safety and Hygiene Act. The charges relate to mouse activity on the premises.
The hotel is being prosecuted by Birmingham City Council’s Environmental Health department and the charges relate to September 2016.
The hotel was handed a zero rating, the lowest possible for hygiene during a routine inspection on September 28.
Environmental health officers had criticised how safe the food was to eat and the cleanliness of the kitchen at the French wine-themed venue.
However, the hotel was given a five-star rating by inspectors back in February 2017 and hotel bosses said it was an isolated incident which was dealt with within 24 hours.
A spokesman for Hotel Du Vin said: “The safety of our guests and staff is our number one priority and we take any breach of health and safety standards extremely seriously.
“We immediately rectified the issue that caused the temporary breach in September 2016 and all staff at this hotel have undergone rigorous retraining.
“We would like to reassure visitors to our hotel in Birmingham of our total commitment to maintaining best in class standards.”
David Beckham, Simon Cowell, and West Ham United’s first team squad are among the big names to have stayed at the former Victorian hospital, which dates back to 1884.
