A BUILDERS’ merchant in Solihull has appointed a new chairman following the death its longserving figurehead aged 99.

Ken Smith, whose father Howard founded EH Smith in 1922, died in November. He was one of the West Midlands’ longest-serving businessmen and was still working as the company chairman.

The Shirley-based firm has now appointed chief executive John Parker as its new chairman. Mr Parker has been a director at the family firm since the 1990s and the chief executive for the past ten years.

He is a well-known figure in the construction industry, having served on the board of the National Merchant Buying Society and as chairman of Cemco buying group.

More recently, he took a lead in the formation of Fortis Merchants and was its inaugural chairman.

EH Smith said his appointment followed a 19 per cent increase in turnover in 2016/17.

Mr Parker said: “I am delighted to be leading EH Smith into its second century in business, par- ticularly at such an exciting time for our company.

“I am also honoured to be following in Ken’s footsteps.

“We will be maintaining our family and community-focused business culture.

“In recent years, we have invested heavily in our branches, concentrating on product ranges, competitive pricing and our ability to adapt in uncertain times.

“Our focus going forward includes maximising one of EH Smith’s key strengths - the expertise of our employees.”
