Blues sweat on Grounds injury news

-

DEFENDER Jonathan Grounds was seeing a specialist this week as Blues wait for news on the severity of his injury.

Steve Cotterill admitted the situation was ‘not a good one’, speaking in the aftermath of the 4-1 Cup reverse at home to Huddersfield.

Grounds was carried off half an hour into last Saturday’s 3-1 win at Sheffield Wednesday, and the gaffer is waiting anxiously for the verdict on the 30-year-old.

“It’s not a good one, he will be seeing the specialist,” Cotterill said. “We will have a better diagnosis then. But it’s not a good one, it’s not like he is going to be out for a week or two, it’s going to be a little bit longer.”

Grounds has been one of Blues’ most consistent players this season and no player has made more than his 168 appearances since he arrived on a free transfer from Oldham in the summer of 2014.

Meanwhile, Blues’ leading scorer Sam Gallagher has been named in a stats-based Championship team of the month. The XI, selected on the figures collated by statistics website whoscored.com, matches the 22-year-old up top with Millwall striker Steve Morison.

Gallagher emerged as a key player towards the end of December having been deployed through the middle.

He started January with three goals to his name but really extended his hot streak with three in the Championship and one in the FA Cup, which was not included in the figures.
