Major works to reroute city buses

-

BUSES are to be rerouted around Birmingham city centre as part of major changes to accommodate the Midland Metro Broad Street extension.

City transport chiefs will introduce new bus lanes, create one-way systems and remove parking bays to accommodate the buses.

The changes, which will be introduced this summer, will impact traffic around Paradise Queensway and Edgbaston’s Five Ways.

Laura Shoaf, managing director of Transport for West Midlands, said: “The Midland Metro extension along Broad Street is going to transform public transport in this part of Birmingham, but while construction takes place we need to make sure buses can continue to operate.

“The work is going to mean possible disruption for buses, particularly at Paradise Circus Queensway and Five Ways.”

The works will be in Sheepcote Street, Great Charles Street Queensway/Paradise, and Bath Row/Holloway Head.

A major new traffic light junction where Islington Row Middleway meets George Road and Bath Row will also mean traffic heading to Five Ways being able to turn right into Bath Row.

George Road will also become a one-way street allowing two local bus services to travel down it.
