Former care home could become day centre after closure criticised
A FORMER care home which controversially closed down could be turned into a day centre.
Elliott Lodge in Kings Norton shut down last July.
But families of vulnerable residents at the home complained they had not been consulted about the move.
Now plans have been submitted to Birmingham City Council to change the use of the building on Southern Drive into a non-residential day centre.
The application, submitted by the Family Housing Association, states: “Elliott Lodge was used as a residential care unit and is now void.
“A provider has now been found who wants to use the unit as a training centre for people with learning difficulties, autism and complex needs.”
The facility would be open from 9am to 5pm from Monday to Friday and create ten full-time jobs.
The scheme comes as the axe looms over another day centre in Kings Norton which helps disabled people. Birmingham City Council is closing the Fairway day centre, less than three miles away from Elliott Lodge, as part of a savings drive.
More than 2,000 people signed a petition objecting to the move.
The council is keen to close it as soon as possible because it costs £25,000 a month to keep it running.
But it has not been able to confirm when as it is still working with service users to discuss alternative facilities.
