New cycleway works could mean delays
COMMUTERS and motorists are being warned of potential delays ahead of major works on one of Birmingham’s busiest road junctions.
Construction work on the new three-mile A38 cycle super highway will reach the busy Belgrave Interchange on Monday (April 16).
The works on the junction of Bristol Street and the A4540 Belgrave Middleway will take place overnight for two weeks.
This will be followed by the installation of temporary traffic lights on the junction from Monday, April 30 as work continues.
Contractor Amey warned there were likely to be delays and urged people to allow extra time for journeys.
The two-way, fully segregated route, which includes a dedicated track in the central reservation on Bristol Road, will connect Selly Oak to the city centre.
Works are expected to be completed by late autumn. They are part of the wider £57 million Birmingham Cycle Revolution scheme to encourage more cycling in they city.
Another cycle super highway is currently being created along the A34 Birchfield Road from the city centre to Perry Barr.
Chris Harris, construction manager for Amey, said: “We understand these works will have an unavoidable impact on traffic but are doing all we can to make sure that any delays are kept to a minimum. We will be using the very latest traffic management technology, monitoring the traffic flows in the area”
