Tudor house with sordid past for sale
IT’S witnessed a lot in its 400 years – not least some sordid history when it was recently turned into an unlikely sex club.
Now one of Birmingham’s most beautiful historic houses – which became notorious as an X-rated swingers’ club – is up for sale.
Stratford House, in Highgate, is set for another transformation after extensive restoration following a blaze in 2015.
The property is back on the market for a more respectable purpose... an office.
The Tudor house, which dates back to 1601, was turned into a swingers’ club in January 2015 but destroyed by a fire in December of the same year.
Advertised as Tudor Lodge during its sex club days, the building was extensively restored after the suspected arson attack left its upper rooms and roof ablaze.
The grade-II listed house is now being advertised by Knight Frank as a 2,200 sq ft office for rent.
The listing describes the property as having been “refurbished to an extremely high standard” and offering “a mixture of open plan and cellular space”.
It is said to have retained its period features and to have excellent natural light.
The house, just off the Moseley Road, was originally built for Ambrose Rotton and his wife Bridget. The couple’s initials are carved into the door head of the entrance porch.
The venue was granted temporary planning permission to operate as a private members’ club and transformed into the Tudor Lodge Club in January 2015.
