ONE of Birmingham’s finest chefs has helped put the Second City centre-stage again as his restaurant was named as one of the top 100 places to eat in the UK this year.

Carters of Moseley, run by Brad Carter, came 66th in the National Restaurant Awards, compiled with the votes of more than 150 industry experts, including chefs, restaurateurs and food writers.

Stefan Chomka, founder of the National Restaurant Awards said: “Chef Brad Carter’s cooking is imaginative and fresh, combining interesting flavours and techniques but without pomp or pretention.

“The restaurant is big on sustainability and pays attention to rare breed animals and wild ingredients, but eating there isn’t a lesson in worthiness – it’s fun fine dining and at prices that make it very democratic.

“It’s a really excellent part of Birmingham’s restaurant scene.”

However, Carters of Moseley is the only Birmingham restaurant to make it into the coveted list this year. The city’s other Michelin-starred restaurants – Simpsons, Adam’s and Purnell’s – failed to make the list.

Last year, Birmingham had two in the top 100 – Adam’s in Waterloo Street was 52, and Simpsons in Edgbaston was voted 96th.

It is a major comeback for Carters of Moseley which was included in the 2016 list at 91, but did not feature last year at all.

Mr Carter, a former culinary arts student at University College Birmingham, is largely self taught. His restaurant was awarded a Michelin star in 2015.

The Top 100 list takes into account food, staff, atmosphere, music, design and price.

The organisers said: “From Michelinstarred dining rooms with tasting menus to casual neighbourhood bistros and steakhouses, the awards are a celebration of places in the UK that make eating out a true pleasure.”

Kiln, a small Thai restaurant in Soho, London was crowned National Restaurant of the Year for 2018.

Nottingham’s two-star Michelin restaurant Sat Bains came 8th in the list.
