Commonwealth Games village designs unveiled
THE ambitious vision for Birmingham’s Commonwealth Games athletes village has finally been unveiled in full.
The proposals, in 300 documents, were published by Birmingham City Council and include more than a dozen images of how the ambitious complex in Perry Barr will look.
Government funding for the sprawling project will not be confirmed until later this year.
The scheme, on the Birmingham City University campus, will accommodate up athletes and officials 2022 competition.
It will be converted into around 1,400 homes kick-starting a housing regeneration in the wider Perry Barr area.
The vast majority of the new properties (1,072) will be flats and maisonettes, alongside 79 houses and 268 extra care apartments.

The scheme has been divided into 11 separate plots.
At its heart will be a six-storey community building, referred to in the plans as Pavilion which will feature a cafe, community hall, and changing facilities.
This will be beneath 28 apartments overlooking a Commonwealth Games park, which forms the largest green open space in the development.
The scheme will include housing allocated for Birmingham Municipal Housing Trust.
The tallest building in the scheme will be a 15-storey apartment block on part of the 24-acre site currently occupied by Trucks Direct.
The largest section of housing sits to the south of the scheme bordering the railway line and will accommodate the 268 extra care apartments.
To the west, they will border the ‘Station Plaza’ plot which features a 14-storey ‘marker’ building serving as the main entrance to the village.
