A summer of no fun is over for Stewart

-

GREG Stewart is desperate to get back to enjoying his football after enduring a ‘pretty long summer’ at Blues.

The 28-year-old has joined Kilmarnock on a season-long loan, which runs until June 9 2019.

Blues could recall the winger in January but having been frozen out of the first-team picture by Garry Monk, it is more likely he has played his last game for the club he joined on a three-year contract in August 2016.

He has not played for Blues since April 2017 and spent last term on loan at Aberdeen. More recently he has passed the last few months training with Blues’ Under-18s.

“I am happy to be here, to get it over the line,” he said after his move to Killie. “I was hoping to get in for the game last weekend but it didn’t quite happen.

“But I am here now, the boys have welcomed me and I can’t wait to get started.

“It has been a pretty long summer training with young boys at Birmingham for the last six weeks, it’s not been easy.

“I am here now and I can’t wait to get started. I have had two days’ training to try to get up to pace so I am looking forward to the weekend.”

His Killie debut could come against Aberdeen on Saturday.

Stewart added: “Hopefully I can work hard and help the team that way, then what I feel I can bring to the team is assists and goals. That’s what I am hoping to get back to doing, enjoying my football, enjoy working hard and being a team player as well.

“We played against them last season and I thought they were a difficult side, that’s probably the toughest Kilmarnock team I have come up against.

“I felt last season you could see they were a good side and the manager is building something here.

“I just can’t wait to get back out on to the football pitch and play the game I love.

“I feel we have got a good squad here, a good mixture and energy, I don’t see why we can’t go up to Aberdeen and get the three points.”
