Bruce is left ‘sickened’ by Cup shocker

-

STEVE Bruce ripped into his makeshift Aston Villa side and said their performance made him feel ‘physically sick’ after losing at Burton Albion on Tuesday night.

Albert Adomah missed a last-minute penalty as the claret and blues bowed out of the Carabao Cup. Liam Boyce’s 51st-minute strike gave the League One Brewers a 1-0 victory.

Bruce was absolutely fuming in his post-match press conference and described his team as ‘embarrassing’.

He said he was ‘flabbergasted’ at such a horror show and warned the fringe players who failed to impress that they will be back on the sidelines against Sheffield United on Saturday.

“Sometimes you get beat in a cup tie when it does not go your way,” he said

“But when you go about it like it is a testimonial or a friendly game then it upsets me to the hilt. Actually, it makes me feel physically sick.

“At this moment I have to take the rap because ultimately it is my team.

“But it will be a shadow of the team which plays on Saturday.

“I would have thought the people who have been knocking down my door in recent weeks would have made a better fist of it than what I have just witnessed tonight.

“You could use the word ‘embarrassing’. We got away with it against Yeovil a few weeks ago.

“Some of them have been knocking down my door now for the past few weeks.

“All I can say is that we got what we deserved which was nothing. The way we played, the way we went about it, was chalk and cheese from what we witnessed on Saturday [against Reading] and the week before that.

“I take the responsibility because I changed the team because of the ones who have been knocking down my door – there was their opportunity.

“But they haven’t grasped it. I can’t stand here and defend them. I’m flabbergasted at what I’ve seen.”
