First homes on huge Icknield Port Loop site to go on sale

- Staff Reporter

THIS is how one of Birmingham’s largest development sites will be transformed with 1,150 new houses.

The first 77-home phase of the long-awaited Icknield Port Loop development near Edgbaston Reservoir will be completed by next spring.

The new masterplan has been released by Joint Venture, the partnership of developer Urban Splash and regeneration firm Places for People. As well as a major housing scheme, the area will be home to a new swimming pool, shops and cafes.

The first 40 properties available will be modular homes, allowing customers to choose floor plans and fixtures to suit their needs. They will go on the market later this month.

Adam Willetts, project director for People JV, said: “This is an incredibly exciting regeneration scheme which will create a new area for Birmingham. Our masterplan will breathe life into this site.

“With the first clearing of the development already well under way, we expect our first customers to be living leisure centre, in these properties by spring 2019.”

A second phase of homes, designed by Birmingham firm, Glenn Howells Architects, will be on sale next year.

Birmingham City Council and the Canal and River Trust are also partners in the regeneration.

Council leader Ian Ward, said: “Port Loop is an extremely exciting residential development and one the city of Birmingham can be proud of. With phase one launching imminently, we can’t wait to see how this unique waterside location develops over the coming months.”

James Lazarus, of the Canal and River Trust, added: “We know that spending time by the water can help people feel happier and more relaxed and, as seen in the masterplan, the regeneration of this area includes rebuilding an area of the canal system which has for years been overlooked.

“This will no doubt encourage more people to use the city’s canals and tow-paths to commute to and from work, travel to the city centre and participate in sports and recreation on the water so the wider benefits of the scheme are really exciting.”
