POLICE are investigating a triple stabbing that took place at one of Birmingham city centre’s busiest spots on Monday.

The shopping area on High Street in Dale End was cordoned off near to a McDonald’s restaurant and the Oasis precinct after a brawl is believed to have broken out as around 100 youths were reportedly hanging around in the area.

Three people suffered stab wounds – including one left with serious injuries – and were rushed to hospital. Police were called just before 5.45pm.

The incident came despite a heightened security presence in the city for the Conservative Party Conference at the ICC. An eyewitness has told of witnessing a “brutal” street fight involving a large number of teenagers.

Police and paramedics were called out shortly afterwards, and the victims were rushed to hospital, one having suffered serious injuries and the other two less serious wounds.

The witness said: “I was on the bus going into town and everyone started making weird noises as it started pulling up at the bus stand near the McDonald’s.

“There was a massive group of kids, I’d say they were probably aged around 16.

“They all went after this one guy who looked grabbed him under a taxi.

“There were probably about 30 of them. Then about 10 or 12 guys started stamping on him.

“I was on the phone to my mum when it happened and I told her I wouldn’t be surprised if he was dead. They were stamping on his head and legs, everywhere. They kept doing it.

“A group of girls broke the whole thing up saying ‘leave him alone, he’s down’. He didn’t wake up the whole time I was there.

“It was only later when I heard someone had been stabbed.”

Police confirmed they the – same age he nearly and went were called to “disorder” and the incident is thought to have involved wider violence as well as the stabbings.

The passer-by, who did not want to be named, added: “They broke off and one walked towards me wiping blood from his nose with a tissue.

“I saw a police officer at New Street and told him what had happened and he just bolted and went straight there.

“It felt horrible to watch, it felt almost like something out of a film.

“It was just so brutal. Even when he was down they didn’t stop.

“It was a gang mentality, were all doing it.” they
