Vested interests cloud the issues

-

DEAR Editor, Two correspondents in last week’s Post offered seemingly obvious answers to two major issues: Brexit and HS2.

However, when I checked up on the summaries of the proposals they don’t cover all bases.

The ‘Norway Model’ as a basis for Brexit (partially leaving & remaining) is good for economic and business reasons and would help the Irish Border problem, but it does not address immigration and free movement.

There would also still be policy ties to the EU. The ongoing failure of the EU leaders to recognise and deal with concerns over major issues such as immigration was a key factor in the Brexit vote.

The ‘High Speed UK’ proposal for the rail network certainly offers better national connections along the routes.

There would also be less disruptive construction – the current HS2 plan feels like a large train bypass being bulldozed across the land with minimal connection to many commuter towns.

However, High Speed UK would not build a new station at Curzon Street and New Street and Moor Street would have to cope as best they can.

No solutions are going to magically sort Brexit and HS2 but so often vested interests and politics cloud the issues so that we end up with disappointing results.

The main legacy from Brexit for the UK may well be the imploding and reforming of our political parties. Mike Pogorzelski, by email
