Designs unveiled for £300m New Garden Square

-

NEW images showing how a £300 million regeneration project in Edgbaston will look have been released.

Property group and landowner Calthorpe Estates is leading the New Garden Square project, in Hagley Road, which will include up to 400 apartments, office space and public realm.

There will also be units for bars, restaurants and convenience stores along with the potential for a 100 bed-hotel and 900 car parking spaces.

New artist’s impressions have been unveiled as a planning application is submitted to Birmingham City Council for the first phase of office development, known as NGS 1, on the 10.7-acre site.

U+I, a specialist in major mixeduse regeneration projects across the UK and Ireland, and Birmingham practice Glenn Howells Architects are also working on the scheme.

Paul Patenall, projects director at U+I, said: “This is a significant step in making New Garden Square a reality.

“Our plans are for a commercialled, mixed-use development, which will provide approximately sq ft of grade A office space.

“This will extend the city core and create a new business destination which will attract significant investment and generate jobs.

“Its impact will be significant for the city’s business development plan and for Edgbaston and its community for generations to come.”

Ralph Minott, director of development at Calthorpe Estates, added: “We are well advanced with the bidding process for the residential element and conversations are progressing with potential funding 500,000 partners for the office element of this sizeable, ambitious scheme.

“It’s an exciting and truly transformational development that will see the regeneration of a first generation 1960s commercial offices site into a new, mixed-use scheme.”

The development site stretches down towards Five Ways island and is bounded by Francis Road and Duchess Road.

Edgbaston House, a 1970s office block on the site, was demolished earlier this year and the project will be opposite a new stop on the extended Midland Metro line.
