Wycombe boss takes Stock over loan puzzle

-

WYCOMBE Wanderers manager Gareth Ainsworth has clarified the circumstances regarding David Stockdale’s recall by Birmingham City.

The Blues goalkeeper spent a twogame spell at Adams Park on an emergency loan deal last month as Wanderers struggled for options between the sticks.

However, he was recalled by Blues who opted not to renew the arrangement and is once again out of the first-team picture at St Andrew’s.

Ainsworth gave his version of events, saying: “We went for David initially and Matt [Ingram, QPR]. David was injured so Matt came in for that weekend; they made it clear that was only going to be one weekend. The next one was a tough one, to get David Stockdale in on the Thursday just before the Shrewsbury game on the Saturday was a test.

“But he was a fantastic person, he came in, joined in the culture, this big, big player who has played Premier League, played Championship.

“He came into League One, no airs and graces about it. He dug in with the boys and you could see immediately the rapport he had. So I was not concerned at all. The only concern I had was a week later when Birmingham said ‘You can’t have him again’ for no rhyme or reason but we just couldn’t have him.

“I know Garry Monk was keen, he was brilliant to allow us to get him in the first place. I think there was a decision made higher up that maybe he couldn’t come. So again we had to look elsewhere.”

Stockdale tweeted: “I’d like to thank everyone at @wwfcofficial for my short time there.

“Wish I could have helped for longer but unfortunately I’ve been recalled by Birmingham City.”

Stockdale joined Blues in 2017 when Harry Redknapp was in charge. He played 39 games but was informed by Monk he was not in his plans at the end of last term. Since then he has loan deals at both Wycombe and Southend.
