LISTED legal and professional services group Gateley has appointed a new chief executive.

Rod Waldie, senior office partner of its Manchester operation and head of the national property team, will take over from Michael Ward next May.

Mr Ward, who is based at the firm’s head office in Birmingham, will remain as a main board director and be responsible for non-legal businesses within the group.

He will also retain a significant shareholding in Gateley for the foreseeable future. Gateley floated on the AIM in 2015 and now runs several separate professional services divisions across the group encompassing legal, property, financial and business psychology.

It was founded as a law firm in Birmingham in 1808.

Mr Waldie has been a member of the group’s management board since joining the business via the acquisition of the Manchester office of Halliwells in 2010.

He has been involved in the successful integration of a number of Gateley’s post-float acquisitions including Gateley Capitus, Gateley Hamer and GCL Solicitors.

Mr Waldie will shadow Mr Ward in the run up to his official appointment and will join the board as chief executive on May 1, 2020.

Chairman Nigel Payne said: “We are delighted that Rod has agreed to lead the business when Michael stands down as chief executive in April next year. We are also delighted Michael’s commitment to the group will continue, both as an executive director and as a significant shareholder.

“Our choice of an internal appointment to succeed Michael and our early addressing of succession allow for a smooth transition to a highly successful and respected colleague who already knows the business, understands our collaborative culture, has excellent client relationships and is committed to the group’s growth strategy.”
