Adam’s makes top 50 restaurants in Good Food Guide

-

A FAMILIAR name in Birmingham’s fine dining scene has once more been named as the top restaurant in the city.

The Good Food Guide 2020 has revealed its list of the best restaurants in the country with Birmingham’s top-scoring venue named as Adam’s, in the city centre’s Waterloo Street, which makes it in at number 49.

The top-scoring restaurant in the wider Midlands was Restaurant Sat Bains in Nottingham, which was listed at number eight. Others include Le Champignon Sauvage, in Gloucestershire, at number 24, and Alchemilla, in Nottingham, at number 41.

Notably, none of the traditionally celebrated Ludlow restaurants of old make it into the Guide’s Top 50.

The Guide is compiled by coupling reader feedback on restaurants up and down the country with anonymous inspections by a team of experts.

Elizabeth Carter, Waitrose Good Food Guide Editor, said of Restaurant Sat Bains: “To ensure that 10 courses flow, as one captivated diner put it, ‘like a wellwritten novel’, is quite an achievement.

“But Sat Bains, John Freeman and the team pull it off, service after service, nailing the combination of artistry, invention,

balance, pace and, of course, taste that confirms the international bestseller status of this unshowy Nottingham restaurant.”

A Stratford-upon Avon restaurant was named as the Best New Entry for the whole of the UK in the Editor’s Awards, which recognise restaurants and chefs who have shown exceptional talent in their field.

The Woodsman in Stratford-uponAvon, was described as “a welcome beacon of hospitality in Shakespeare’s birthplace”.

The Guide reports the restaurant as being “a smart-casual place with an urban vibe that suits this ancient building. Passion for quality runs through every aspect”.

Jon Coates, head chef of The Woodsman, said: “Winning this award makes me extremely proud and is a testament to the effort that all of the team have put in from day one.

“It is very unexpected and I feel honoured that we have been given this recognition. Executive chef Mike Robinson has a vision and the team and I strive to create the best dining experience we possibly can.”

New Birmingham restaurants The Oyster Club (also run by Adam Stokes of Adam’s) and Aktar Islam’s Opheem restaurant have also made it into the guide this year as new entrants.
