- Mubashar Hussain

A THUG who ran down a police officer on a Birmingham street leaving him with life-changing injuries has admitted GBH and a string of other charges.

Mubashar Hussain left Pc Gareth Phillips for dead in Moorcroft Road, Moseley, on August 10.

The 42-year-old West Midlands Police officer suffered head and pelvic injuries and was in intensive care following two operations. He is still in hospital.

Hussain, of no fixed address, appeared at Birmingham Crown Court via videolink on Monday to admit grievous bodily harm with intent to resist arrest.

He also pleaded guilty to two counts of vehicle theft, dangerous driving, two of driving while disqualified, two of assault, assault on an emergency worker, aggravated vehicle-taking, and two charges of having no insurance. A second man, 24-year-old Ahsan Ghafoor, of Fulham Road in Sparkhill, pleaded guilty to two thefts of a motor vehicle and dangerous driving. The case was adjourned until October 15 for sentencing.

After the crash, a senior West Midlands officer paid tribute to Pc Phillips, calling him a “respected, dedicated and brave officer”.

Following the incident, Supt Tom Joyce told the Post: “This was a horrific incident which has shocked his colleagues and everyone associated with West Midlands Police.

“He was simply doing his job as a policeman.

“He is a respected, dedicated and brave officer who is regularly sent to incidents including burglaries and car thefts.”

A JustGiving appeal has been set up to raise cash to support the officer and his family.
