Sawyers has warning for league rivals

- Romaine Sawyers

ROMAINE Sawyers accepts West Brom haven’t hit top gear yet – but he reckons the Championship will know all about it when they do.

Albion have shown plenty of resilience so far this season, having fallen behind in six of their seven league games and yet remain unbeaten.

They are not, perhaps expectedly, as free scoring as this time 12 months ago but have offered spells – none more so than their three-goal, 18-minute burst against Blackburn – where they’ve shown they can really hurt teams.

It’s clear they are yet to peak in terms of performance levels, something midfielder Sawyers acknowledges.

The returning Albion academy star has been a regular in the side since joining from Brentford and has caught the eye, but he knows he and the team in general can improve.

“We’re still building and there’s a lot of new players. We’re trying to get that chemistry so we’re on the same wavelength,” he said.

“We’re still picking up a lot of points. It will stand us in good stead over 46 games if we keep on picking up points. We’re a big club in this league and once we get ahead in games teams will be like ‘wow’.

“When they’re ahead we have to show them what a big club we are. We’ve shown that already this season. Once we start taking leads we’ll be a lot more comfortable.

“It’s nice to say we’re unbeaten and we want to turn the draws into wins. Away from home if we keep picking up points and we make our home ground a fortress we’ll be all right.”

Meanwhile, Albion are closing in on the signing of defender Saul Shotton. The highly-rated 18-yearold is available on a free transfer after Bury’s expulsion from the EFL.

He featured for the Baggies’ second string against Mansfield last week and has now agreed terms to sign for the club.

It is believed Shotton will put pen to paper on a two-year deal with Albion still able to sign and register free agents.

The teenager, who made six senior appearances for Bury, was understood to be the subject of rejected bids from Leeds and Watford last season.
