400 apartments revealed for huge ‘New Garden Square’ masterplan
ALMOST 400 new apartments are set to be built as part of a huge regeneration project in Birmingham.
Proposals worth £90 million have been revealed by city developer Court Collaboration to build 392 units on the New Garden Square, in Hagley Road, Edgbaston.
The £300 million project was first unveiled by landowner Calthorpe Estates in 2016 and could eventually house 500,000 sq ft of grade A offices, a 100-bed hotel, retail, bars, restaurants and public realm alongside the apartments on land off Hagley Road.
If approved, the apartment would be built on land next to the Plough and Harrow hotel, currently occupied by office blocks which would be demolished.
The wider New Garden Square project covers 11 acres and is being delivered by Calthorpe Estates and London-based regeneration specialist U+I, with Court Collaboration agreeing a long leasehold deal on this latest plot.
Alex Neale, managing director of Court Collaboration, said: “As well as delivering stunning properties, Court Collaboration is committed to creating developments which support local communities and their economies so we’re very much looking forward to building these new homes and working in collaboration with Calthorpe Estates as the mixeduse New Garden Square project comes forward.”
Work is due to begin next spring and be completed by spring 2022.
Ralph Minott, development director at Calthorpe Estates, added: “We are delighted with the Court Collaboration proposals and at seeing the residential element of New Garden Square coming forward.
“Calthorpe Estates are excited by the innovative and landmark design for the residential scheme which excellently complements our New
Garden Square masterplan.”
The new apartments have been designed by Jewellery Quarter-based practice Glancy Nicholls Architects.
The first element of the commercial buildings, called NGS1 and spanning 165,000 sq ft of new office accommodation, received planning consent in March.
