RAZR RETURNS

THE original Razr phone from Motorola was one of those iconic devices that defined an era in mobiles.

Back in the day, Motorola sold 50 million units of the novel flip-phone, propelling it into the big league of phone makers and the original Razr was on sale between 2004 and

2007, before Apple came along to spoil the party with the iPhone.

That’s all ancient history now, but would you believe Motorola is still producing phones and that the Razr is making a comeback?

The new phone’s design is very similar to the original, albeit a bit bigger (although almost as thin!).

Its secret weapon is that, once flipped open, it reveals a large foldable screen that flattens out into a conventional-looking smart phone – all screen, and 6.2ins of it at that.

When closed – it folds roughly in half – there’s a second screen on the outside that displays the time and various notifications. When open you’ve got everything you’d expect from a smartphone – the device will run a variant of Android.

It’s due to hit the shops in the US on Boxing Day with a starting price of $1,500. That puts it at the high-end of the market and makes it much less likely to make a real impact. We’ll see when it comes to the UK early next year, when it will be exclusive to the EE network.

It might not be a gangbuster hit, but it’s still nice to see one of the old names still in the game and doing something genuinely different, with a nod to its illustrious past, of course…
