Economic bounce from trampolining championship
THE World Trampolining and Tumbling Championships to be hosted in Birmingham in 2023 will prove to be ‘good value’ for the city, the council leader has assured.
The event, coming a year after the heavily scrutinised Commonwealth Games takes place in the city, will cost around £3.3 million to put on with various organisations contributing.
The city council will be responsible for underwriting the event and will be contributing £300,000 itself out of its major events budget in 2023/24. A detailed financial risk assessment has also been drawn up.
On Tuesday the council’s cabinet approved receipt of a £726,000 grant from UK Sport while British Gymnastics is also contributing to the event and Arena Birmingham is providing its venue for a discount.
It is anticipated the championships, which will hopefully be shown on UK and international television as well as streamed on the internet, will generate around £4.6 million for the economy.
City council leader Ian Ward said:
“The city council’s contribution to this event will be £300,000 which is a sum contained within the major events budget.
“The gross budget for the event as a whole is some £3.3 million so I think the city council is getting good value for its contribution here and the economic benefit to the city of hosting the championships will amount to some £4.6 million so again it is good value for money for the city.”
The Federation Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG) awarded the championships to Birmingham earlier this year.
A council report stated the event would be ‘part of the legacy’ from hosting the Commonwealth Games in 2022, the funding for which is still not fully secured. In recent weeks a report to the council’s Resources scrutiny committee revealed that more than £20 million out of the expected £75 million worth of ‘partner contributions’ towards the Games had still not been found.
