Selfish Sussexes’ shock decision has let down the Queen

- Chris Bucktin

THE headlines sent shockwaves around the world.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s announcement they were to step down as senior royals while wanting to carve out a more “progressive” role within the monarchy stunned us all.

The couple said they wanted, as it were, to get off the royal gravy train and become “financially independent”.

But, as we’ve come to learn over the past three years, what the Sussexes say and what they do are habitually different things.

The reality is Harry and Meghan still want the British taxpayer to fund their lavish lifestyle but miss out on the gravy train’s boring stops that involve performing their public duty on a wet weekday in Wakefield.

The magnitude of their selfishness was of course lost on many of Meghan’s countrymen and women across the pond, whose idea of royalty are the Kardashians.

Instead, they have been told the Duchess and her Prince Charming were driven out of the UK due to Meghan’s race.

Anyone reading the New York Times or CNN’s website would think when the former actress entered the royal family she traded the Hollywood hills for Buckingham bigotry.

That the rise of the far right in America was nothing compared to a race hate epidemic spreading throughout Britain.

Commentators, some of whom are from the UK, sparked a shamefully false narrative that the only reason Meghan has been so harshly criticised in the UK is that we’re all a bunch of racists living in a racist country.

CNN’s Lisa Respers France wrote: “From the moment Prince Harry and Meghan Markle made their relationship known to the public in 2016, the message many Britons sent to her was clear: ‘You aren’t one of us, and you aren’t welcome.’” While British commentator Afua Hirsch delighted in telling New York Times readers: “Black Britons Know Why Meghan Markle Wants Out.” Throughout her piece, she painted the UK as a country of deeply rooted bigots, jeered on by an equally racist press.

To prove her point, Hirsch pointed to how in one article the Duchess was said to have “exotic” DNA while another piece stated Meghan grew up (almost) straight out of Compton as if she was a member of the Bloods or Cripps. The idea the British media have consistently used racism towards Meghan is not only absurd but offensive.

What both Hirsch, Respers France and those who make similar arguments all conveniently overlook, was the overwhelmingly fawning coverage the Duke and Duchess enjoyed from the news of their relationship to their wedding day.

All those articles attacking her supposed treatment failed to mention the couple’s fall from grace at their own hands.

Whether it be spending £350,000 on a New York baby shower on the same day they pleaded for people to think of the poor, from banning photography by Wimbledon tennis fans as she sat in Centre Court, or to preaching to the public about global warming while flying around in private jets, the woke, over-sensitive couple have only themselves to blame. Their fall from the nation’s favour has absolutely nothing to do with Meghan’s race. It is because of their senseless, selfish actions.

What kind of game were they playing when they withheld details of Archie’s birth from supporters and then not wanting anybody to know who his godparents were? Or deciding to move away from Kensington Palace, away from his brother to a lavish taxpayer-funded newly-refurbished home?

Women like Princess Diana, Sarah Ferguson and Camilla ParkerBowles, all suffered criticism far greater than Meghan, yet none of them turned their backs on the public or their duties.

It is true, Meghan could be forgiven for being grossly underprepared for life as a royal.

But what astounds me most, is how, through all this, Harry can’t see how incredibly insulting he is being not only to the country but to the Queen – who has always stood by him.
