Car dealers banned for selling dangerous motors

-

A FATHER and son have been banned from trading as secondhand car dealers for seven years after vehicles on their forecourt were found to be unroadworthy.

Mohammed Tufail, 59, and Mohammed Umair, 27, had run Car Place Birmingham Ltd, on Small Heath Highway, Small Heath, since 2015.

But in 2017 they were investigated by Birmingham Trading Standards. Officers found six vehicles for sale on their forecourt were unroadworthy. The pair were prosecuted and fined and their company went into liquidation. But they failed to pay their fines and after an investigation by the Insolvency Service this year, were disqualified from being involved in running any other business for the next seven years.

The investigation by the Insolvency Service found that the men, both directors of Car Place Birmingham, were fined just over £33,000 by a court in March 2018. They had been convicted of criminal proceedings for selling vehicles which were not safe or roadworthy.

Tufail received a fine of £11,345, whilst his son Umair was fined £8,726. The courts also made a forfeiture order for the six cars to be destroyed.

Following the court proceedings, Car Place Birmingham entered into a Creditors Voluntary Liquidation in May 2018. At liquidation the company still hadn’t paid the fine. So the Insolvency Service began proceedings to obtain directorship disqualifications against the two men.

Tony Quigley, head of Trading Standards at Birmingham City

Council, said: “These individuals supplied unroadworthy and dangerous vehicles with complete disregard for the safety of their customers or other motorists.

“Both failed to take on their responsibilities and obligations as company directors. Now this ban has come into effect, they are unable to set up, manage or promote any business.

“Birmingham Trading Standards works in partnership and supports actions taken by all other agencies to protect the public from rogue traders.”
