A MURDER investigation has been launched after a man was stabbed in a Birmingham city centre hotel and later died.

Officers were called to the Crowne Plaza hotel, in Holliday Street, at around 7.20pm on Tuesday, where the 20-year-old victim was found.

Detectives launched a murder probe and enquiries led to the arrest of a 19-year-old man on Wednesday morning. He remained in police custody for questioning as the Post went to press.

The parties involved are thought to be known to each other, police said.

Detective Inspector Jim Colclough, from West Midlands Police’s Homicide Unit, said: “A young man has tragically lost his life and our thoughts are with his family after receiving such shocking news.

“They have been fully updated with news of our arrest and are being supported by specialist officers.”

An ambulance spokesman said: “We were called at 7.22pm to reports of a stabbing in Crowne Plaza, Holliday Street, Birmingham.

“Two ambulances and a paramedic officer attended the scene with the first crew arriving within two minutes of the 999 call being made.

“When ambulance staff arrived they found a man in cardiac arrest being given CPR by hotel staff. They quickly took over resuscitation efforts and continued emergency treatment on the man en route to hospital.”

Despite efforts to save the man he was later pronounced dead at hospital.

Bosses at the four-star Crowne Plaza Birmingham refused to comment.
