Two blocks demolished to make way for square
TWO office blocks in Birmingham have been demolished to make way for a new residential development.
The buildings at 123-127 Hagley Road, in Edgbaston, have been razed as part of work on the £330 million New Garden Square scheme.
New apartments for rents will be developed on the site of the two buildings, forming part of a wider vision to create a 10.7-acre, mixeduse estate with 600,000 sq ft of grade A office accommodation.
There are also plans for a 100-bed hotel, restaurants, bars and retail alongside 392 apartments for rent and a garden square.
DSM Group was appointed to carry out the demolition of the buildings, which were 35,000 sq ft and 63,000 sq ft respectively, in a 15-week project.
Historic Birmingham
property group Calthorpe Estates is leading the New Garden Square project. Director of development Ralph Minott said: “We commenced working with DSM at New Garden Square back in 2018 when we appointed them for the demolition 20-storey Edgbaston House.
“The demolition of 123-127 Hagley Road is yet another milestone in the development of New Garden Square and the changing shape of the Birmingham
of
the
skyline as our plans for this ambitious scheme begin to take shape.
“We’re excited to be progressing to the next phase of work, in spite of the current challenging circumstances, as the arrival of this new, thriving area in Edgbaston, which will be a mixed-use destination in its own right, comes ever closer.”
Calthorpe Estates is working with developers U+I Group and Court Collaboration on the overall scheme.
