Prevent that injury before it happens

-

IT is Injury Prevention Week, a campaign run by the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers.

As solicitors who represent the injured, we see the devastation and heartbreak that serious injuries and fatalities bring.

It is a good time for all of us to reflect on how we can make changes, big or small, to reduce the number of needless injuries that occur.

Even some injuries which could be considered more minor can bring with them pain, time off work and reduced productivity.

When many people in our workforce are currently working from home, it is worth remembering that employer’s obligations to them are still relevant and important.

Making regular contact with colleagues is important in reducing stress. People at home are often lone workers, and employers should still ensure they are healthy and safe. Remember the basics in supporting people with display screen equipment – advise them to take regular breaks, to avoid awkward or static positions and encourage getting up to move around. Workstation assessments are still needed even though people may be working from home.

At the other end of the spectrum, in figures from 2019, the construction industry remains the third most dangerous in the UK, with 1.31 deaths per 100,000 workers. It was also the most improved – a really encouraging sign.

Trade associations have held more educational events alongside campaigns for better training, equipment and awareness.

Injury Prevention Week is a time when all of us can consider our health and safety policies and culture with renewed vigour. However good they are, there is almost always room for improvement. Any injury avoided as a result is a success. Philip Edwards, Partner, Serious Injury Team at Clarke Willmott
