Friends reunited as George joins Karanka

-

GEORGE Friend has revealed the Aitor Karanka factor was key in his decision to quit Middlesbrough for Blues.

The defender became Karanka’s first signing at St Andrew’s, putting pen to paper on a two-year deal with the option of a further 12 months.

In doing so he turned down the chance to extend his eight-year stay at The Riverside, where he previously worked under the new Birmingham boss.

Karanka led Boro to promotion from the Championship in 2016, with Friend a key part of the side.

“Aitor is a big reason. I had a successful time with him at Middlesbrough and I know what he’s all about,’’ he said.

“I know he’s looking to build something here and the club has got ambition in that aspect.

“There’s a good feel around the place with his appointment. He was keen to bring me in and I’m looking forward to getting going.

“I’m not sure I’ve been a first signing before at a club but I guess I’ll take that honour!”

Friend, who can play at left-back or in the middle of defence, made almost 300 appearances during his time on Teesside.

He added: “It’s important to stress it wasn’t a decision I took lightly at first because I’d built a lot at Middlesbrough and, having been there for so long, had a good connection with the club.

“I had a really successful time there and loved it. What I would say is I’ll bring that same drive, passion and commitment now I’m at Birmingham.

“I’m really excited to get going and hopefully the fans will see that as well.”

Karanka could soon find himself in a position to launch a pursuit for Newcastle goalkeeper Karl Darlow. The 29-year-old, who has not made a Premier League appearance since 2018, is on his way out at St James’ Park and Karanka is keen. Newcastle boss Steve

Bruce is in the market for a new keeper and should he land a new face between the sticks, then Blues may well be given the green light to launch talks over a seasonlong loan move for Darlow.

Blues will still have to dig deep for a deal, with Newcastle likely to demand a loan fee on top of having to fork out on his wages.Karanka is in desperate need of a goalkeeper following Lee Camp’s departure at the end of last season.

Blues’ current keepers union boasts only one senior name, Connal Trueman.
